Spike Lee's "Passing Strange"

August 26th, 2009 versetyle No comments

Spike Lee x Stew x Passing Strange

Acclaimed director, Spike Lee will soon be bringing a theatrical version of  writer/performer Stew’s “Passing Strange”.  The Broadway version of this story was a hit, and ran for 6 months. It also earned its writer a Tony award for best book in 2008. According to writer Mark Ellwood of the Daily News, “the movie raises interesting questions about “passing” – how the lead has to pretend to be from the ghetto, not the middle class, to succeed in the end. Its very topical for African-American celebrities now.” Spike Lee stated, “I always thought about this experiment: two rappers who have the same identical skills lyrically and rapping trying to get a label deal. One says, ‘I graduated Harvard,’ and the other says he just got out of Rikers. The label will sign the guy that just came out of Rikers. A lot of these cats come from middle-class backgrounds, but say ’I was on the corner, slinging, caught up for gun posession,’ making sh– up literally. Its crazy, this whole gangsta mentality.”

Next Up: Big Tub

Debut Album “Rain Down On Me”

Recording Artist, Member of the non exclusive ISE Band and Saxophone Player Andrew Pointer or better known as “Tub”, was born in Chicago, Illinois. This Chicago native was first inspired to be a musician at the age of 3 when he heard the saxophone player from Saturday Night Live. At the age of 9, he played the theme from the evening soap opera”Dynasty”, on a wooden recorder. The next day, his parents bought him a saxophone.

After graduating from high school, Andrew received a scholarship from Kentucky State University. There, he played in the marching, jazz, concert, and commercial bands. (First Chair and Section Leader) Andrew also formed and put together a band, won homecoming talent shows and became opening acts for; Ja rule, Whoodini, Mid Night Star, Sunshine Anderson, and Kid Capri, and more.

In 1999, he got married, had a daughter but realized that something was seriously wrong with his life. He realized he was not living in a manner that would set the standard for his children. He then realized that he had no relationship with God. So he started attending church services and later started playing his sax in the church. One day while playing, he felt the spirit of the Lord in a church service and got baptized in November 1999. Since that day, Andrew has vowed to only play to glorify God.

Tub has performed as the opening act for many top named acts such as, Whoodini, Ja Rule, Kid Capri, Mid-Night Star, and Sunshine Anderson. This seasoned Sax, Flute and just about any reed instrument player has also played at WestPoint Baptist Church for Albertina Walker, and also performed at Community Covenant Church for the well known Darius Brooks.
